Welcome to Debt Free Dawn!
My name is Dawn Perry and I’m a social worker on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. And since January 2016, I’ve been reselling clothing online to pay down my $130,000 student loan debt.
How successful have I been? Well, in my first six months I paid off over $35,000 in debt in my spare time just by reselling new and used clothes, and I’m here to help those of you who are facing similarly steep financial hills to climb.
Whether you’re new to reselling, have some experience, or are a full-time flipper, I hope you’ll be able to find something useful on my site. Please visit the blog, comment on some posts, and tell me what you think! I want to hear about you and your story, and I’m excited to continue sharing my journey with you as I inch closer to experiencing pure financial freedom!
Four years ago I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) program in Massachusetts and was hit with a suddenly harsh reality:
I was a young professional with $130,000 in student loan debt.
How could I possibly have taken on that much debt? I was only 23 years old. I didn’t know what I was doing when I was taking out those loans. I was miserable and needed to reset my life, so my boyfriend Bryan and I moved to Hawaii for a fresh start in an island paradise.
I took my first professional job as a case manager for a health insurance company and began throwing as much money at my loans as I could.
To supplement my loan payments, I tried to earn extra income on the side. I worked in restaurants, I made and sold beer bottle cap earrings…really anything to help me get out from under my crushing six-figure debt. I wasn’t sleeping, I was always anxious — it was awful.
Then, this past January, everything changed. I read about a woman who paid off $100,000 of student loan debt in just 3 years by reselling clothing online. Why couldn’t that be me?
It seemed too good to be true. I was skeptical, but I was even more curious. I went to my closet and found a pair of brandless, teal flats and listed them on Poshmark.
No takers. A week later, still nothing.
I got discouraged and deleted the app. Then a month later: “CHA-CHING!”
Someone bought my shoes for $7. Sure, it was just $7 (and after commission it was only $4) but those $4 felt like freedom. Maybe I wouldn’t be able to pay off $100,000 in 3 years like the woman in the article, but maybe I could make enough to relieve the stress.
I went to my local Goodwill and bought a few more things to sell. Soon enough, I was dropping those off at the post office. I went out again and bought more stuff. Not long thereafter, more sales.
I was hooked. Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel. I rapidly grew my business, and before I knew it I was paying $1,000s to my loans multiple times per month.
Remember that woman who made headlines by paying off $100,000 in 3 years? The one whose success I was skeptical of? I was on pace to pay off $100,000 in just 18 months.
That’s when I decided I had to share my success, my failures, my method, and my tools. Student debt is a national crisis, however, I believe that once you realize you are in debt, its your responsibility to act. There are thousands of people in my shoes (plus someone in my brandless, teal flats!).
If you’re one of those people looking for a way out, you’ve found it!
